Punk Pioneer: Poly Styrene & X-Ray Spex

Poly Styrene

As there is Royal Wedding fever overkill everywhere right now. I thought I'd introduce you to
an individual who was a source of inspiration to me in my teens when I was singing in various bands.
I wish I had told you about her when she was alive. I was upset to hear about the death of Poly Styrene,
one of the first British punk pioneers. Born Marianne Joan Elliot-Said,
to an Scottish-Irish mother and
dispossessed Somali  aristocratic father, ran away from home aged 15.
On her 18th birthday, she witnessed one of the first gigs of the Sex Pistols,
where she was inspired to start her own punk band X-Ray Spex - Poly Styrene was born.

Poly Styrene

I was introduced to the world of X-Ray Spex after attending an anniversary gig
for punk music at the 100 Club at Tottenham Court road, with many punk legends
in attendance. I became friends with Bruno Wizard, who was a good friend, fellow
punk and collaborator of Poly Styrene, fronting his own ironic punk band
The Homosexuals during the heyday.
We spent many an afternoon in cafes in Soho, seeing bands he manages,
with Bruno regaling me with his many adventures with Poly. He gave me a limited
edition album of X-Ray  Spex
with it's special art cover. Once I heard the words:  " Some people think little girls
should be seen and not heard, but I think oh bondage up yours!"
I was hooked and obsessed about the band for a long time. I may often to start a DJ set with this
particular song, with Poly's nonchalant but menacing intro.

The landmark X-Ray Spex
album Germ Free Adolescents
was a primary influence on
Britpop and Riot Grrrl.
Their influence has been
felt the world over. I was caught by
the combination of her distinctive voice, intelligent, political, humanitarian lyrics
(tackling poverty, racism amongst others) paired with her stylish rebellious attitude
and soaring saxophone behind most of their tracks. She made history as a bi-racial feminist
punk who put her own stamp on the movement. Poly was customising before
it was considered cool. Instead of the ready made expensive Seditionary style,
she performed in her self-made Day-Glo clothes & dental braces, encouraging
you to Do-It-Yourself.

Billboard described her as " The archetype for the modern day feminist punk....
she was one of the least conventional front-persons in rock history, male or female."

TRUST: The Prince's Trust Lipstick Campaign

As I arrive back from my adventures in LALA Land, my latest campaign was launching for The Prince's Trust. It is a brand new perfect LRL (Little Red Lipstick). As I discovered it suits many different skint tones and pouts, with celeb hairstylist and Kate's BFF James Brown, Henry Holland, Holly Valance, Lisa Butcher and others were also fronting this campaign and Pouting for The Prince Charity. The Prince's Trust enlisted the help of celebrity make-up artist Karen Adler, who counts Anna Friel as one of her clients and besties (who I thought on the shoot could be her twin sister!)

Pouting for charity: The Prince's Trust

Karen revealed to me on the shoot that she also got the opportunity to achieve her dreams with the help of The Prince's Trust. I also know others who have benefited from the money raised for young people who want to make something of themselves and launch a career, dream, business....

I feel honoured to be able to lend my time lips to the cause, as I am a fan of the trust and also now of the lipstick!

BAFTA + ELLE Style = Awards Season London

As awards season approached I still couldn't have prepared
myself mentally and physically for the onslaught of dresses,
designers, accessories, actors, musicians, stylists, models,
directors, producers... and glasses of champagne involved!

Then the fact that the BAFTA & ELLE Style awards were
back to back (not to mention the Grammys on the same
night as the BAFTAs, across the pond) and if that wasn't
enough, on Valentines Day!!

Who planned this calender, whoever did, God bless them!
Because I know that it was only a MIRACLE that got me
through each and every day leading up and post... before
flying off to New York Fashion week for work, for 2 days....
we are now in the midst of London Fashion Week and then
it's the Oscars - all that can be said is - God's Speed!

ELLE Style Awards 2011
 I am wearing a Dolce & Gabanna Spring/Summer 11 sheerblack tiered dress
(that was picked out 30 minutes beforeredcarpet at the awards!!! incidently showing my
knickers with tiny red hearts all over them!), jewelery by Rachel Galley and
clutch bag from Reiss.

For the Baftas I wore a silver metallic dress from new designer from Ireland
Joanne Hynes

The highlight of the ELLE awards, for me, was sitting next to Courtney Love
and Vivienne Westwood's speech -  not knowing who Emma Watson is,
therefore not preparing a speech on Emma- as she doesn't read magazines, doesn't
watch TV, or watch films..especially not Harry Potter.

Muse of the Month - Lee Miller

I first discovered Lee Miller at the opening of an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. It wasn't an exhibition focused on Lee Miller, it was one of their permanent exhibits, with various photographs, stories, information from a certain era of the early 20th Century. There was just a group of  two photographs of Lee Miller and taken by Lee Miller, that inspired me to discover more about Miller. It was during my time at Chelsea College of Art studying Contemporary Art & Artist along with Sketching. Sadly I missed the huge retrospective exhibition on at the V&A a couple of years ago called The Art of Lee Miller. But you can still buy postcards of her photography, books and pictures as I did.I think I was also inspired by her 20's hairstyle for one of my new hair looks!

The life Lee Miller led was a fascinating, creative life of a free-spirited woman
ahead of her time, with intelligence and beauty. She was a multi-tasker or "slasher" before women
were even fully accepted in the work place. Her transformation from Vogue fashion model to
artist's muse, to ground-breaking artist - which in turn led to her unprecedented career as a photographer.

Lee Miller
by Edward Steichen
Miller, born in Poughkeepsie, New York (where her early life was
as interesting and where we see she got  some of her fire from) -
she was classically beautiful and was discovered, 1927, by Conde Nast himself.
She began her modelling career on the front cover of American Vogue.
She is immortalized by Steichen, Hoyningen-Huene, Horst and
other famous photographers.

Paris, 1929, Miller becomes the protege and lover of Man Ray, she invents
with him the solarization technique of photography, develops into a brilliant surrealist photographer,
and plays the statue in Cocteau's film Blood of a Poet.

Europe, 1939-45, Miller was living at occasionally with her future husband, the
painter Roland Penrose, she becomes a US war correspondent and covers the
siege of St. Malo and the liberation of Paris. Her photographs of Dachau
concentration camp shocked the world. Her finest work included portraits
of Picasso, Braque, Ernst, Eluard, Miro....

These are just a few of the many lives on a journey of this extraordinary artist,
free spirit and a constant inspiration to myself and my own work.

BAFTA / InStyle: The Best of British Talent

In between rehearsals, I attended the Bafta / InStyle event to celebrate the Best of British Talent, last week.
The party did indeed bring the best of British Talent, established and up-coming actors, musicians, directors, writers....I spotted Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis a.k.a Gollum, Thandie Newton, Andrea Riseborough (to be seen in Never Let Me Go with Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley & Andrew Garfield), I caught up with one of the Treadaway twins, Margot Stilley, David Gandy, Natt Weller, Jonathan Ross, Heidi Klum (not quite British , but she is a talent and looked gorgeous). When not eyeing the talent there was pizza, photobooths and a pro make-up stand to keep guests pretty and entertained.

Glamour Magazine - StyleWatch

I some how managed to play Fashion Police in between filming - phew! I'm no Joan Rivers (on E! as in Entertainment, for those who don't watch it.) but I wouldn't go as far as her anyway, as I may be on the receiving end!
I was in good company with Amy Molyneux of PPQ and Amelle from the Sugababes also on the squad (force?). We were the police and Nicole, Halle and Mila were the offenders (fashion criminals??) Awards season always has the toughest and most harshest spotlight on the fashion of the redcarpet on the actresses. Even after the adulation once you collect your OSCAR / GLOBE / BAFTA etc - the fashion critics can still have you weeping in your Christian Louboutins! So I was kind, but still very honest....

Have a look at our verdicts at Glamour Magazine... Plus not a Joan Rivers in sight!

What Do You Think?

Film 2011 - Behind the scenes

I am pregnant!!..... OK, well I'm not exactly pregnant, but my character is.....

I have been MIA (Missing-In-Action) recently as I've been on set shooting a short film, in various locations in London. My character in this film is ready to pop! It's an integral part of the story, which I don't want to ruin before you catch it at the festivals (it's still in it's "working title"). But it was amazing the way I was treated differently by complete strangers who passed by, when we were shooting in the street. It's a documentary style film, which was a very new and inspiring experience for me - as it is different from dramatic acting - ie. on stage or period dramas etc - it has to completely look like a documentary as the audience has to believe the subject matter and that this is what's happening right now - which is our aim.

Oh yeah, it's a comedy doc, so it's a Mockumentary! My new favourite word!
How many months do you think I am now ? Here, see what I have in the oven!
